Detox Bath Recipe

One of my favorite ways to unwind after a long day (or week) is to take a nice, hot bath. But did you know that you can reap some extra health and wellness benefits by adding just a few things to that bath water? Taking a detox bath 2-3 times a week is such a treat - mentally and physically. Why? Whether you're under the weather and trying to open up breathing passages or trying to rid your body of toxins that are found in food, drinks and even drugs (OTC or otherwise), sweating is your body's natural way to detox and taking detox baths can help that process along even more.

And, you probably have most of the ingredients in your kitchen anyway. What you'll need

  • 1 cup Epsom Salts

  • 1/2 cup baking soda

  • Essential Oils (optional but dang they pack a punch)

The Epsom Salts helps draw out toxins from the body, but they also ease stress, improve sleep, and reduce inflammation to relieve pain and muscle cramps/soreness. The baking soda neutralizes the water and can help reduce dry skin and irritations. Essential Oils have an abundance of wellness benefits and which ones you choose to add to your detox bath will depend on WHY you're doing the detox bath at that moment. If I'm feeling fine and just want to detox and relax, my favorite combo is to add 3-4 drops each of Lavender and Valor. If I need to help ease a stuffy nose, I'll add Eucalyptus or a blend that has Eucalyptus in it. If it's germ sharing season, I'll add Thieves. What to do: mix your Epsom Salts, baking soda and oils of choice in a glass jar or bowl. Run the bath making the water as hot as you can stand it and add the salts/baking soda/oil mix to the water. I personally love using a bath pillow as well so that I can really relax. Soak for 20-30 minutes. It's important to keep in mind that you're going to be sweating a lot during this process, so drinking plenty of water prior, during and after is vital. Also, if you're sensitive to heat, take caution when standing up once the bath is over. While ideally, I'd be taking these baths 2-3 times a week, that's not always realistic. But, I do try to schedule some me time and do this at least once a week. Enjoy and happy detoxing!
